Dalton Highway
Sometimes referred to by locals as simply “The Haul Road”, the Dalton Highway is a lifeline for supplies to Deadhorse, Alaska (also known as Prudhoe Bay). Starting just North of Fairbanks, AK and traveling up the Northern Slope, the Dalton Highway is your entrance to the Arctic Circle. The “highway” passes Gates of the Arctic National Park, and as close as you can get by road to Kobuk Valley National Park, as well as the conquering the famous Atigun Pass before eventually getting you to Deadhorse, AK.
While “highway” is in the name, you shouldn’t expect it to be similar to any highway you’ve driven in the lower 48. Despite being unpaved for the vast majority of its 414 mile length, the Dalton Highway can be traversed by almost any vehicle with the proper preparations, although almost all of what you’ll see will be semi’s hauling supplies.
If you’re driving all the way to Alaska, you may as well get all the way to the top and put your feet in the Arctic Ocean, we’ve got first hand experience getting there, so we are more than happy to help plan your adventure!
